Tranquilitas vs. Recess: Which Calming Drink Actually Works Better?

If you've spent any time in the calming drink aisle, you've probably picked up a can of Recess. They were one of the first to make "put down the seltzer, pick up something that helps you chill out" feel normal, and I respect that. But when people ask me how Tranquilitas stacks up against Recess, I want to give a real answer. Let's actually look at what's in each drink.

What's in Recess

Recess actually has two different product lines, which trips people up. The original Recess (the one in the black cans) has 10mg of broad spectrum hemp extract per serving, plus a small blend of ginseng, lemon balm, and L-theanine. It's built around hemp.

Then there's Recess Mood, which is CBD-free. The sparkling water version has about 53mg of magnesium from a proprietary blend (magnesium L-threonate, magnesium ascorbate, and vitamin B6), along with L-theanine and lemon balm powder. The powder version steps that up to 1.6g of a magnesium blend and 200mg of L-theanine plus 180mg of passionflower extract.

What's in Tranquilitas

Every stick pack of Tranquilitas has 250mg of magnesium as magnesium glycinate, 200mg of L-theanine, 3g of inositol, 2g of taurine, and saffron extract. No hemp, no CBD, no proprietary blend hiding behind a single combined number.

Where the two differ

Here's the thing about "proprietary blends." When Recess Mood lists "53mg from our proprietary magnesium blend," you don't actually know how much of that is the good stuff (magnesium L-threonate) versus the cheaper filler forms. That matters, because different forms of magnesium do different things in the body, and a proprietary blend lets a brand round up on the total number without telling you the breakdown.

We didn't want to do that. Every major ingredient in Tranquilitas is listed with its exact dose, front and center. 250mg of magnesium, specifically as glycinate, which is one of the best absorbed and gentlest forms on your stomach. No blend, no mystery math.

The other big difference is what we left out. Original Recess is built around hemp extract, and if you're specifically looking for a CBD-forward product, that's worth knowing going in. Tranquilitas has never contained hemp or CBD. We built the whole formula around amino acids and minerals that have a long, well-documented history of supporting a calmer nervous system: magnesium, L-theanine, taurine, inositol, and saffron.

Dosing philosophy

Recess Mood's L-theanine dose (200mg in the powder) is actually right in line with ours. Where we differ more is on the mineral side. Their sparkling water only has 53mg of magnesium, which is a fraction of what research generally points to for actually feeling something. Tranquilitas has 250mg, which sits in the range studies tend to associate with real reductions in perceived stress and better sleep quality, not just a token amount for the label.

We also added inositol and taurine, two ingredients Recess doesn't use at all. Inositol plays a role in how your brain processes serotonin signaling, which is part of why we think it helps with the "spiraling thoughts" kind of stress, not just physical tension. Taurine calms an overactive nervous system through a different pathway than magnesium or L-theanine, so the two work together rather than doing the same job twice.

So which one should you buy?

Honestly, if you like the taste of Recess and it's working for you, I'm not going to tell you to switch just because I make a competing product. But if you've been taking it and wondering why you're not feeling much, it might be the dosing. A lot of "calming" drinks put just enough of an ingredient on the label to make a claim, without enough to make a difference.

That's really the whole reason Tranquilitas exists. We wanted a drink where every dose is high enough to actually do something, and low enough that it doesn't knock you out. You should be able to have it in the afternoon and still get through your day.

If that sounds like what you're after, give Tranquilitas a try. And if you want to dig into any specific ingredient, we've written full breakdowns on the magnesium, L-theanine, inositol, taurine, and saffron in every pack, so you don't have to take our word for any of it.
